Ah, the lovely Diamond Head hike! It is a must-do for the beautiful view of Honolulu, Koko Head, and the historical military buildings. Plus it’s a nice short hike (1.5 miles) for those who are not avid hikers, although slightly steep with a 500 ft elevation gain and about 1/10 of a mile of stairs. It is open from 6am to 6pm everyday, cost $5 to park or $1 to walk in.
The hike starts out on a nice sidewalk for about 1/3 of the way. It then progresses into a rocky dirty trail that is relatively flat. You’ll start gaining more elevation here and the path will start to get curvy.
after many switchbacks you will eventually get to the stairs portion! climb up the stairs (74 steps) and head through the long, lighted tunnel. At the end of the tunnel is your worst nightmare… 99 more steps to climb! I believe there is a longer, more rampy way to surpass the 99 steps.
after heading up the steps you get to the spiral staircase of which you climb 43 step to get to the observation platform. Enjoy the view and stay a while!
It took me about 25 minutes total to do the hike, mainly because I jogged part of the way down. They recommend about 1.5 -2 hours total for the hike though.
bring lots of water and decent shoes!
